You’ve got guests coming over in a few hours which puts you in cleaning crunch time. You could save on all the stress by cleaning throughout the year instead of putting all of it on yourself in a single day.

How often should you clean your house? That depends on which room we’re talking about. Certain surfaces need a wipe down each day while others only need to be cleaned once a week or so.

To help you out, we’ve got a break down on what needs to be cleaned when. Check out this guide to learn how to keep your house sparkling.

Kitchen

Your kitchen is a breeding ground for bacteria. With all the food preparation you do, it doesn’t take long for your floors and counters to become a mess.

So, to keep things sanitary, it’s recommended that you clean your kitchen surfaces at least once a day. You can put off cleaning your microwave and oven for a while but everything thing else needs a good scrubbing. Give your counters a wipe down and mop your floors when you make a spill.

General Surfaces

Any area of your home that you eat in should be cleaned once a day. This means your dining room, breakfast nook, and living room. If you don’t clean up the crumbs it will attract bacteria and pests.

Pests love clutter about as much as they love food crumbs. They like to hide in piles of mail and other junk. Take away some of their places to hide by making sure you throw away your paper trash every day.

Bathroom Sink Area

Your bathroom sink gets covered in toothpaste, makeup, saliva, and other substances each and every day. You don’t want people to see that when they walk in your washroom. So, the bathroom sink is a pretty important part of cleaning your house.

Break out the disinfectant wipes and go over the sink once every few days. This will be enough to keep bacteria from building up on the faucet, sink, and counter.

Declutter

With all the stuff you have laying around your home, it doesn’t take long for the place to get cluttered. Do a quick sweep of your house once every two days.

Grab the shoes that are laying in the middle of the floor and place them on the shelf. Any clothes that you have laying on your bed or hanging on a chair should be put in the closet or in the hamper. Gather up the little things laying on your bathroom counter and put them in their respective places.

Pick up your children’s toys and put them away or make them do it. It doesn’t sound like a lot but you’ll be surprised at the kind of difference this general sweep can make.

Regularly Touched Stuff

Your child comes home from school carrying a nasty virus on them but of course, they don’t know it yet. They grab the TV remote and flip it over to their favorite cartoon channel to begin winding down for the evening. After they go to bed, you take the same remote to turn the channel to something you want to watch.

Now you have the virus that the child brought home. Frequently touched areas like the TV remote, door handles, game console controllers, and light switches, need to be disinfected at least once a week. This will keep germs to a minimum and stop nasty infections from entering your home.

Microwave

Your kitchen should be cleaned every day but your microwave only needs to be cleaned once a week to keep bacteria down. All you have to do is pour water and vinegar in a dish and place it in your microwave.

Set the microwave to high and let it go until the window starts to fog up. Take the dish out and give the inside a thorough wipe down with a sponge. All the caked-on food splatter should come right off.

Bathroom

Due to the humid environment, your bathroom is vulnerable to mold and bacteria. To stop this from happening you need to clean everything once a week.

Empty the trash can, clean the mirror, give the toilet and tub a good scrubbing, and don’t forget to sweep and mop the floor.

Fridge

When you leave food in your fridge for so long that mold is allowed to form, it creates a nasty odor. It also has the potential to contaminate all the food that’s not spoiled.

Every few weeks, take all the spoiled food out of your fridge and wipe down the shelves. Do some meal prep to use any food that’s close to its expiration date.

Floors

You should spot clean your floors every single day by mopping up occasional spills. You only need to do a serious clean about once every two weeks.

Doing so will keep pet hair, dust mites, and pollen at a minimum and help increase the lifespan of your floor. Make sure to put extra focus on rooms that you spend a lot of time in. This is the best way to keep a clean house.

Oven

Cleaning your oven is a huge job but the good news is that you only have to do it three times a year. Wipe the food splatters off the walls, get rid of any grease, and give the hood vent a wipe down if you have one.
